“Covering” At Work: Dress Code Policies, Tattoos, and the Law

A workplace policy that bans the display of body modifications, such as tattoos and piercings, is both legal and routine. However, by discriminating against heavily tattooed individuals, employers reinforce stereotypes. This presentation will provide an overview of different workplace policies towards tattooing, and the voices of participants describing their experiences with workplace body art policies, discrimination, and acceptance.

Dr. Beverly Yuen Thompson is an Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Siena College, in Albany, NY. She earned her MA & Ph.D. in Sociology from the New School for Social Research in New York City. She also earned an MA in Women's Studies from San Diego State University.
